WINTER ADVENTURES

Maybe it’s weird to write about winter in summer, especially if we take into account the fact that I love winter, but adore summer. Anyway, it was a long time ago when I realised that it is much better to write about traveling experiences after summing up the impressions which requires a certain time lag.

Last winter, I skied in the French Alps. It was the second time that I spent my winter holiday in France. Four years ago, we were in Les Sybelles area, which belongs to the Savoy Alps. The name of the picturesque mountain village where we stayed is Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves.

However, going to the most famous area of the French Alps (Les 3 Vallees -The Three Valleys) this winter, made me completely speechless. We stayed at a place called Orelle that is connected by the longest telecabine (a gondola lift, a cable car) in the world to Plan Bouchet (the skiing area that is part of The Three Valleys). The accommodation was located at 800 meters above sea level, where the gondola lift, in 12 minutes, pulled us out at astonishing 2000m!

Since we were on vacation in March, the weather was great. It was more like spring break. The temperature in Orelle climbed up to 23 degrees Celsius. At the ski resort the temperature climbed to zero degrees, but the subjective feeling, due to the high altitude and proximity to the Sun, “forced” many of skiers who were resting and sunbathing in cafes to take almost all of their clothes off :).

Besides the excellent arranged ski slopes, for serious adrenalin junkies (unfortunately or fortunately I am not one of them), there is the World’s highest zip wire. The La Tyrolienne zip line can be accessed by the Bouchet chairlift in the Orelle ski area (3200m), and it finishes at the summit of Val Thorens. The price of this, certainly memorable, but a frightening experience is 50 euros.

Others, who are not fans of skiing and other winter sports, can enjoy amazing landscapes and do something good for their health.

My warmest recommendations for spending a winter holiday in this fabulous skiing area.

Have a nice trip! 🙂

Smederevo Fortress – the biggest lowland fortress in Europe

To those who are planning a visit to Serbia, I highly reccomend visiting the City of Smederevo which is only 46km far from the capital of Serbia, Belgrade.
The main, most important and magnificent tourist attraction of Smederevo certainly is the Smederevo Fortress. That’s the biggest lowland fortress in Europe. It is located on the mouth of Danube and Jezava rivers. It was built in the 15th century by the Serbian Despot Djuradj (George) Branković. Djuradj himself, being one of the most educated European rulers of the time had very rich library; Kir-Stefan the Serb lived and worked on the Despot’s court. After 1459 Smederevo remained under the Turks and it was held by them until 1867. During the WWII the German occupational forces were storing some 400 thousand tons of ammunition in the area of the Big Town. In an explosion that took part in June 1941, two and a half thousand people lost their lives. The city of Smederevo later managed to demand and be paid war damages from the Germans on account of that event, which makes it unique in the world. The fortress was placed on the Tentative List for possible nomination as a World Heritage Site (UNESCO).
You can enjoy the magical view of the whole complex of the fort and the river Danube from the walls of a Small town. The Fortress consist of the Big town (public area) and the Small town (court). The cost of an individual ticket for the Small town is symbolic- only 1€.
The Fortress is an exclusive venue for musical, theatrical and other cultural events. In the summer time, the Small Town is the stage to the Fortress Theatre, an international theatre festival (www.tvrdjavateatar.com). The festival Smederevo’s autumn is devoted to fruits of autumn (fruits, grapes and vine) with medieval knights carneval and a rich cultural and artistic program (http://beautifulserbia.info , www.sljivovica.net ). This event has a long tradition, it was established in 1888.
Enjoy a visit to this magical place!ImageImageImage
